June was a month full of trips and lots of work trying to rehome puppies, dogs, cats, kittens..... soon we'll get lots of pictures in the rehomed animals page

We would like to thank all the shops that generously donated the prizes for the Raffle and Auctions

We raised a good amount of money, a little over a thousand euro, enough to pay the rehoming travel expenses for three dogs at the beginning of this month.

The sign reads - "Help the stray animals of the island, give generously"
If every time that we visit any of the shops that has one of the donations boxes in the picture we would give generously 50 cents, then maybe the streets of Naxos wouldn't have so many strays animals. Is just a small amount that I don't think it would ruin the family budget, on the contrary it would be of great help for all those strays.
NAWS was formed by "foreigners" lets help them with this effort for the abandoned and stray animals and eventually our island. And do not forget that that kind of help is an example of civilization that I hope we have...... signed anonymously.........................."ZIFI"

We had our Basillopita (New Year Cake) cutting ceremony and the lucky coin this time was for Lucretia !

NAWS was critisized in the local newspaper Kykladiki, you can read a small translation bellow the article and our press release.

I do not know what the Naxos Animal Welfare group does in the island, but we have discovered that there are not a few stray dogs in the island streets, in the alleys, in the squares
A reader of this column said to us a few hours ago that near
the police station there is a dog that is wondering around and carries things
here and there and that someone should pick up this dog, he’s getting into the
house’s patios and takes all the shoes
We do not know what is the animal welfare doing in the
island but someone has to protect the people and children of the stray dogs as
many times they have ticks on them as they do not know what the word “vaccination”
means.. And the strays from the people as many times they leave their victims
on the asphalt.
Beside that is a cultural and social matter the care of the stray animals

NAWS answer
First of all we would like to thank Mr Vlahakis for showing his concern
about the strays animal in Naxos Town and his mention that caring for the strays shows a degree on civilization.
This gives us the opportunity to inform you what is NAWS doing ? All the
members are volunteers that give of their own time even though they all have
jobs and families, to the care of the animals that our fellow citizens
abandoned, or mistreated, or that tourists found the opportunity to abandon as
if they were old toys
It’s worth mentioning that according to the law (Ν.3170/2003) the local municipalities are
responsible for the care of the stray animals and that there is financial help
available from the ministry for this issue, and that involves only a request
from our municipality as it has been  done in Santorini and Paros with great success, as they have got the finanlcial
help that the EU destines for this purpose.
As of today, without any economical help from the municipality, with
funds that come only from donations, membership fees and other events
as bazaar sales; NAWS has done a very rewarding work. With this little funds we
have managed during 2009 to find homes for 43 dogs and 23 cats, while we
sterilized 33 dogs and 145 cats with the valuable help of the vets on the island
With our best wishes for the New Year, we invite you to become members
and help us in our efforts to have less strays.

NAWS BAKE SALE 

NAWS Bake Sale was a fun event with lots of familiar faces and very welcomed new faces too.
We managed to collect a total of 664.30 euros, THANK YOU !

We were delighted with all the desserts, cakes, cookies, jams, breads and many other delicious things we had for sale, so as the wonderful handcrafts and we could not resist tasting the the Rakomelo that certainly gave us a little bit of warmth for a winter night ;-)

We would like to thank first of all Makis, for letting us use his restaurant GIRASOLE.

And second, to all the people that helped us baking things !! We could not do it without you  !! Nancy, Ada, Marianne, Joy, Reid, Rena, Poppi, Matina, Terry, Fani, Rodanthi, Debbie, Sandra, Diana, Lucretia, Jackie, Barbara, Tony and to all those that I did not mention, please forgive us !
